There is much, much more that I have not mentioned. This really is an intensively moving book. Has Kenneth survived? Will he come back to "Rilla-my- Rilla"? Two of Gilbert and Anne's boys come home - one has been killed. Will any of the boys there survive? Then the war ends. The news from the front is sometimes bad. Meanwhile the war drags on, bringing more and more devastation. She organises the local Junior Red Cross and adopts a baby who's mother has just died and whose husband is at war, leaving no-one to care for the baby! Rilla brings the baby home in a soup tureen, and looks after him. Meanwhile Jems faithful dog waits at the railway station awaiting Jem's return and won't leave it.
Kenneth kisses her before leaving, and gets her to promise that she will not kiss anyone else before he returns. During the course of the book Rilla's other brothers, Walter, the intense, poetic one and Shirley join up - and so does Kenneth Ford. The War comes and Rilla's oldest brother Jem is old enough to volunteer - and does so. During that evening she has a dance with Kenneth Ford, who she cares about and who she hopes cares about her - he calls her "Rilla-my-Rilla". Rilla is at a dance when news of the declaration of War on August 4th, 1914, comes through. Rilla is almost 15 when the book begins, and her parents worry because she seems so irresponsible. It describes the activities of Gilbert and Anne (nee Shirley) Blythe and their family and friends during the First World War, from the point of view of Rilla, Anne's youngest daughter.
